CL 2306 List of final topics

These are the final topics for semestral project. The discussion forum on cms for the selection of topics will be opened on Tuesday, 0900h. Class, try to test out opening cms page from home in this few days sometimes there can be problems, if popups are blocked from your home computer.

  1. Solvent Recovery System
    Methanol and Toluene are being used in a chemical process to produce a lubricant additive, Sulphonate. They act as solvent and catalyst in the batch process and the amount of usage is 1.5 MT of Methanol and 1 MT of Toluene. Water is being generated in the process and also exist in the reactor feed stream as a separate charging component.
    Review the methods commonly used for solvent recovery. Select and design a solvent recovery to recover the Toluene and Methanol from the mixture. Minimum purity of the solvents required are 97%
    Ensure no production stoppage due to solvent recovery
  2. Production of hydrogen
    In April 2005, Rolls Royce signed an agreement with a Singapore consortium to develop a viable power system based on fuel cell technology. Hydrogen gas is a key requirement for fuel cells. It has been said that hydrogen is the fuel of the future.
    1) Review the various methods for hydrogen production in industry
    2) Propose a suitable method for increasing hydrogen production in Singapore
  3. Desalination
    A report, released by Pacific Institute in 2006, on the impact of Desalination in California, stated that "The potential benefits of ocean desalination are great, but the economic, cultural and environmental costs of wide commercialization remain high.
    Review the economic and environmental impact of implementing Desalination as for drinking water production in Singapore
    Propose a viable alternative to Desalination for drinking water production in Singapore, or methods to minimize the impacts discussed.
  4. Alternative Fuels
    Why are alternative fuels not more common than they are today, given the high price of fossil fuels? What are the ramifications of people’s slow adoption of alternative fuels?
  5. Green plastics
    Review current developments and uses of green plastics
    Propose viable uses of green plastics in Singapore
  6. Membrane Technology
    Review and understand the following areas regarding membranes:
    Materials
    Selectivity
    Configurations
    operating issues
    Discuss new uses and development in membrane technology
  7. Water for Pharmaceuticals
    Discuss the importance of water quality in the production of pharmaceuticals
    Discuss the different types of water used in the production of pharmaceuticals
    Discuss the process of water treatment used in the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Process
  8. Refrigeration
    Discuss the common methods of refrigeration/chilling
    Design a system to chill a process stream of Natural Gas, from a temperature of 15 degC to -20degC. Flow rate of NG is 6.9 x 10^6 Std m3/day. You should design using the compression refrigeration method. Select the refrigerant, determine its flow rate, and specify major specifications of equipment
